For nearly a decade, L+R has partnered with Spireworks to create a one-of-a-kind interactive lighting experience, allowing users to control the lights of iconic skyscrapers in real-time. Initially developed as an iOS and web app, Spireworks provided a platform for engaging with the city skyline. The experience's continued global popularity, including Red Dot Award, Anthem Awards, Good Design® Award, Webby Honoree, and more, underscored the clear need for expansion. As technology evolved, so has the vision—leading to Spireworks 2.0, a complete redesign built to scale engagement and unlock new possibilities for immersive experiences.

With growing demand and an evolving technology landscape, Spireworks sought to make its platform more accessible and immersive. This meant launching a fully cross-platform mobile app, digitizing intricate 3D renderings of participating buildings, and expanding its portfolio beyond the original locations in New York City. Additionally, Spireworks aimed to grow its integration of philanthropic giving seamlessly into the user experience, allowing participants to contribute to meaningful causes while engaging with the app. Transforming an established app to unlock next-level immersion, visual fidelity, and social impact.

Immersive Interaction, Stunning Visuals, and Broader Impact Across iOS & Android
L+R chose to develop Spireworks 2.0 using Flutter, enabling a seamless cross-platform experience for both iOS and Android users. The new version introduced high-fidelity and stunning, full 3D digital renderings of buildings, offering a more engaging interface. Additionally, we integrated the Change platform, allowing users to donate to charitable causes directly through the app, reinforcing Spireworks’ mission of combining interactivity with social impact. The updated app also expanded access to more buildings in the New York City skyline, offering a wider range of interactive experiences to its growing user base.

Spireworks 2.0 made an immediate cultural impact. The app went viral on TikTok, generating over 4 million views within days and capturing the imagination of a new wave of users. This momentum led to high-profile collaborations, including integrations with Mr. Beast, Amazon Prime, and The New School University, among others. The cross-platform launch dramatically increased accessibility, bringing the magic of Spireworks to an even larger audience while reinforcing its position as a cutting-edge urban experience.

From The Client, Mark
