DUMBO Public Art Spatial Guide  • Declassified
The hands-free AI guide to DUMBO's public art, built for Meta AI glasses

Background

Redefining Public Art Engagement

The Brooklyn neighborhood of DUMBO hosts millions of annual visitors and features over one hundred artist studios alongside numerous prominent public art installations. Traditional physical plaques disrupt pedestrian flow and often fail to provide deep contextual meaning. Local business stakeholders sought a modern intervention to connect diverse global tourists with these cultural assets through an accessible medium.

Challenge

Designing a Screenless User Experience

Delivering a screenless educational tour required overcoming the friction of traditional mobile applications. L+R needed to utilize the Meta Device Access Toolkit SDK to accurately interpret real world visual data. The core friction involved balancing continuous spatial scanning with battery constraints while ensuring the auditory interface felt natural rather than overwhelming for people navigating busy urban sidewalks.

Solution

Engineering an AI Powered Auditory Adventure

Our strategy, design, engineering, and operations teams collaborated to build a hands free spatial guide leveraging Google Gemini for real time contextual processing. When users simply glance at a sculpture, the application automatically narrates rich historical insights about the artist. We also implemented localized push notifications to gently prompt further discovery, marrying advanced computer vision with humanist educational values.

Impact

Deepening Engagement Through Smart Glasses

This auditory guide transformed how pedestrians interact with the urban landscape. By removing digital screens, we increased active dwell time around the installations and achieved the stakeholder goal of deeper cultural engagement. The project demonstrates how leveraging AI wearables can seamlessly integrate educational content into daily routines, creating a highly accessible and immersive public utility.

The Bottom Line

DUMBO Public Art Spatial Guide shows how AI glasses can turn public space into a more accessible cultural layer. The broader challenge is helping people discover context without forcing them into a traditional screen flow. L+R connects spatial computing, product design, and practical AI to create experiences that support attention instead of pulling it away from the environment.
